It is best to purchase a heart rate monitor that has the dual signal of Bluetooth and ANT+. The Wahoo TICKR and Scosche Rhythm+ are the two monitors OnBeat recommends and stocks for gyms to purchase. Send an email to email@example.com for more information.
There are two main advantages of ANT+ over Bluetooth.
- Bluetooth only allows a one-to-one pairing. This means a user that owns a monitor will use the Bluetooth signal to pair with their personal phone. This pairing prevents the monitor from connecting to the iPad/iPhone running OnBeat's group app. You must ask that person to disconnect their monitor from their personal phone. This is not the case with ANT+ because it is a one-to-many connection. By using the ANT+ antenna (WASP) sold by OnBeat, your users can keep their monitor linked to their personal phone and the OnBeat group app will connect using the ANT+ signal.
- When using the built-in Bluetooth of the iPad/iPhone, you have to keep the device within 10 meters of all users or the connection will fade or drop. By using the ANT+ antenna you can strategically place it in your room, so it gets better coverage. Many gyms will pace the antenna in their ceiling if an outlet exists. Because the heart rate data is sent to the iPad/iPhone over WiFi, you no longer have to worry about having your device be within range of the users.
There is no distinct different in signal strength or consistency between Bluetooth and ANT+.
